The Chakowli tribesmen all stand in stunned silence as Tur paddles back to shore, a smug smile on his face. King Meaha wiped out after Tur’s dirty trick, and has yet to show himself after the monster wave broke hundreds of feet from shore.

Tur won, but I worry that the tribe will vent their anger upon him because from my perspective that was cheating, pure and simple. Yes, King Meaha splashed water in Tur’s face, but that was different than an all out physical assault, albeit with a surfboard.

The gentle morning sunlight and refreshing breeze seem at odds with the grim faces of the natives on the beach. Their moods grow blacker when Tur reaches the shallows, and wades up to his knees while hooting and hollering like a victorious child.

“Yeah, how about that? First time ever and I beat the galactic champ.” He holds his hand up for a high five with the nearest native, but the other man just stares in sullen silence. “No? Okay, whatever.”

Tur comes up to me, his body steaming in the warm air as the cold water evaporates off his skin.

“Dott, did you see that? Did you see how I won? Maybe they should make me King now.”

I grab him by the mouth and hiss into his ear.

“Tur, shut up. Can’t you tell how upset everyone is? Don’t you look?”

He peers around at the tribe, who are slowly circling in around us. Some of them have begun to mutter in their tongue, while others are seizing up rocks, sticks, anything they can get their hands on.

“Well, now that you mention it, they do sort of look a bit ah, miffed.”

“They’re about to lynch us, you fucking dolt. Did you have to cheat?”

“If I hadn’t cheated, they would have put me to death anyway.”

Tur holds his hands up, palms out, and addresses the angry tribe.

“Hey now, hold on. I won the contest, fair and square, so I get to stay on the island.”

When he uttered the phrase ‘fair and square’ the tribe began to shout, closing in with greater speed. This is it. We’re going to die, and how ironic is it that we came here to get away from danger? Maybe there was another place we could have gone, but I couldn’t think of any.

“Stop.”

Meaha’s baritone cuts through the air. The massive King wades onto shore, holding the remnants of his shattered board in his hand. All things considered, he doesn’t seem all that much the worse for wear. His black expression takes away any hope I had of a peaceful resolution.

The tribe parts for Meaha, and he trudges through the sand, his eyes laser focused on Tur.

“In all my years, I have never seen anyone pull a trick so dastardly, so conniving, and so down right insidious.”

Tur grins, and spreads his arms out as if to say ‘oh well, what can I do?’ I put my palm over my face and sigh. Hopefully they’ll at least send our bodies back to shore for proper burial.
